Seminar with Guro Tony Marcial

United Modern Arnis recently hosted a 4 hour seminar with Guro Tony Marcial. The seminar was informative and great fun. It was good to see some familiar faces as well as some new ones.
After the training, Tonys students and United Modern Arnis students came back to my home for some good food and conversation. Here are some pics.

TRAPPING

I was asked by a dedicated student recently about trapping. He wanted to know where to find a good DVD on the subject. We have, in our library, a some works that touch on trapping, and wooden dummy practice. We also include trapping in our classes as I have JKD in my background, however this student would like to do more, as well as do some research on his own. I recommended that he look for works by 3 or 4 people who I know are very good.

I have found that "trapping" is not all that different than "baiting" in modern arnis. In both there needs to be a close in terms of distance, intent, proper body position/footwork, flow, and a knowledge of body mechanics. In fact, is this really very different in any style that includes closing the gap? Well, of course there is the element of trapping in and of itself, whereas in some styles the close is simply to strike ballistically, and not necessarily to trap per say.

Having said the above, it should be apparent that there is an overlap, or connection in most styles. Most styles have their forte or area of specialization, but there will be an overlap/connection with many other styles.

I was once asked to teach a group of aikido students some of the knife work that we train in Filipino styles. They were shocked at the speed and movement of the practice. After the class, I put the knife down and asked them to disregard the outfit I was wearing and look at just the empty hand movement. I could see the light go on for them. They saw that the movements knife vs knife were the same empty handed. We then talked about the fact that it is all the same. Sometimes the only thing that changes is the intent.

Back to trapping; in boxing there is something called the fend, or parry. If we change the intent from simply slipping the punch or causing the other person to miss, to actually attempting to immobilize the attacking arm with forward pressure toward their center, we have trapping.

My intention here is not to discuss the different ways to set up or find a trap, it is simply to address the fact that trapping occurs, or can occur regardless of style. It is a very useful tool that will enhance ones ability exponentially.

Train well.

I received this forward from a friend....

McCain Gets My Vote!

I’m for the guy who can tell the lion from the lamb.
Contrarian that I am, I’m voting for John McCain. I’m not talking about bucking the polls or the media consensus that it’s over before it’s over. I’m talking about bucking the rush of wet-fingered conservatives leaping to Barack Obama before they’re left out in the cold without a single state dinner for the next four years.
I stand athwart the rush of conservative ship-jumpers of every stripe — neo (Ken Adelman), moderate (Colin Powell), genetic/ironic (Christopher Buckley) and socialist/atheist (Christopher Hitchens) — yelling “Stop!” I shall have no part of this motley crew. I will go down with the McCain ship. I’d rather lose an election than lose my bearings.

First, I’ll have no truck with the phony case ginned up to rationalize voting for the most liberal and inexperienced presidential nominee in living memory. The “erratic” temperament issue, for example. As if McCain’s risky and unsuccessful but in no way irrational attempt to tactically maneuver his way through the economic tsunami that came crashing down a month ago renders unfit for office a man who demonstrated the most admirable equanimity and courage in the face of unimaginable pressures as a prisoner of war, and who later steadily navigated innumerable challenges and setbacks, not the least of which was the collapse of his campaign just a year ago.

McCain the “erratic” is a cheap Obama talking point. The 40-year record testifies to McCain the stalwart.

Nor will I countenance the “dirty campaign” pretense. The double standard here is stunning. Obama ran a scurrilous Spanish-language ad falsely associating McCain with anti-Hispanic slurs. Another ad falsely claimed McCain supports “cutting Social Security benefits in half.” And for months Democrats insisted that McCain sought 100 years of war in Iraq.
McCain’s critics are offended that he raised the issue of William Ayers. What’s astonishing is that Obama was himself not offended by William Ayers.
Moreover, the most remarkable of all tactical choices of this election season is the attack that never was.
Out of extreme (and unnecessary) conscientiousness, McCain refused to raise the legitimate issue of Obama’s most egregious association — with the race-baiting Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Dirty campaigning, indeed.
The case for McCain is straightforward. The financial crisis has made us forget, or just blindly deny, how dangerous the world out there is. We have a generations-long struggle with Islamic jihadism. An apocalyptic, soon-to-be-nuclear Iran. A nuclear-armed Pakistan in danger of fragmentation. A rising Russia pushing the limits of revanchism. Plus the sure-to-come Falklands-like surprise popping out of nowhere.

Who do you want answering that phone at 3 a.m.? A man who’s been cramming on these issues for the last year, who’s never had to make an executive decision affecting so much as a city, let alone the world? A foreign-policy novice instinctively inclined to the flabbiest, most vaporous multilateralism (e.g., the Berlin Wall came down because of “a world that stands as one”), and who refers to the most deliberate act of war since Pearl Harbor as “the tragedy of 9/11,” a term more appropriate for a bus accident?
Or do you want a man who is the most prepared, most knowledgeable, most serious foreign-policy thinker in the United States Senate? A man who not only has the best instincts, but has the honor and the courage to, yes, put country first, as when he carried the lonely fight for the surge that turned Iraq from catastrophic defeat into achievable strategic victory?

There’s just no comparison. Obama’s own running mate warned this week that Obama’s youth and inexperience will invite a crisis — indeed a crisis “generated” precisely to test him. Can you be serious about national security and vote on November 4 to invite that test?
And how will he pass it? Well, how has he fared on the only two significant foreign policy tests he has faced since he’s been in the Senate? The first was the surge. Obama failed spectacularly. He not only opposed it. He tried to denigrate it, stop it, and — finally — deny its success.
The second test was Georgia, to which Obama responded instinctively with evenhanded moral equivalence, urging restraint on both sides. McCain did not have to consult his advisers to instantly identify the aggressor.

Today’s economic crisis, like every other in our history, will in time pass. But the barbarians will still be at the gates. Whom do you want on the parapet? I’m for the guy who can tell the lion from the lamb.

More thoughts on the upcoming election

I have included the below link to the Mike Huckabee show with Joe "the plumber". This clip illustrates a few more reasons why I do not trust Barack Obama. I also consider his inexperience with only two or three years in the Senate. It was recently pointed out to me that someone close to me lives the life he does ""because of Unions", and Obama supports Unions. My question is, how do you know what Obama supports with so little time in the Senate and so little work, comparatively.

In answer to a comment to an earlier post; if there were any real relationships that were questionable with John McCain the Dems would have played it up in the liberal media. Neither party would let something like that go without releasing the hounds.
It comes down to trust and experience, and of course Faith. I have none of these in Barack Obama. I have some of these in John McCain.
Let me also repeat, I like Sarah Palin better than Joe Biden. What a good sport appearing on SNL. No Fear.

Check out this link, and the woman from Canada. Just copy and paste it:

This From Fox News Bill O'Reilly

There is an interesting debate among Republicans. Some want Senator McCain to go scorched-earth Wednesday night against Barack Obama, hammering him on William Ayers, ACORN, and even Reverend Wright. People in this camp want a brawl.

Other Republicans believe that kind of exposition would hurt McCain, as the press would spin the attacks as desperation and racist, that kind of stuff. Remember, Independent voters, especially women, are the ones who will decide the race.

Already a group supporting McCain, but not associated with him, is letting it fly in a TV ad.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Barack Obama seems to have different values from most Americans. His supporters put up Cuban flags with the murderous leftist Che Guevara in Obama's campaign offices. Obama's campaign received $33,000 in illegal donations from Palestinians living in the Middle East. A top official of the terrorist group Hamas endorsed Obama's campaign. And who can forget these hateful sermons from Obama's pastor of over 20 years?

REV. JEREMIAH WRIGHT: God damn America.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Our Country Deserves Better PAC is responsible for the content of this ad.

Also, a full-page ad urging debate moderator Bob Schieffer to ask about Obama's income redistribution plan appeared today.

Now, "Talking Points" believes McCain should ask Obama about his past associations to define the issue. Clearly, that is why McCain feels a guy like Ayers, for example, is important.

But there's no doubt in my mind that McCain must make points on the economy if he hopes to win, and not complicated policy points. The senator needs to be somewhat emotional and dramatic. He needs to feel the pain Americans are feeling.

As for Barack Obama, he simply has to keep his composure and restate his points. All he has to do is prevent McCain from making him look foolish. A debate tie would be great news for Obama.

With two and a half weeks left in the race, John McCain needs to state one solid message, and that message should be that he will avenge the folks for the economic corruption both on Wall Street and in government. He will right the wrongs and deal with the betrayal people are feeling. That's it. That is the only thing that will turn things around for McCain.

"Talking Points" made that suggestion last week, but the McCain campaign did not respond. Since that time, however, a number of people at McCain events have told the senator face to face he needs to confront the villains.

Yes, Ayers is a villain, but that was a long time ago. Some current villains are still sitting in plush offices on Wall Street and Capitol Hill. Those are the people McCain should concentrate on.

And that's "The Memo."

The Upcoming Election

Just some quick thoughts. Most have probably been mentioned by someone at this point.

I think that it is vitally important to take into consideration the history, record, experience and character of an incumbent.
Barack Obama has some concerning relationships, ties, affiliations, or whatever one wants to call them. To attempt to persuade people that he had no idea that his pastor of 20 years held the ideas or beliefs that have been brought to the fore is insulting. How does ones relationship with his pastor of 20 years not affect someone at their core?
His acquaintance with a domestic terrorist is deeply concerning. There is so much that is deeply concerning, that to imagine that someone like him could be running this country is frightening.
I don't believe, for one minute, that he will support our second amendment rights. I believe that if he could, he would re write the Constitution.

John McCain has a long history of fighting for his country in. He has many years of experience in government.
I believe that he does support our second amendment rights and believes in the Constitution as it was intended and written.
He does not have, or at least it has not been brought to the fore, the types of concerning relationships that Obama has.

Whether you like them or not, one of them will be running our country. I trust what I know of John McCain much more than Barack Obama.
I also like Sarah Palin more than Joe Biden.

I believe that the safest, most experienced, most trustworthy person with the better record is John McCain.

Again, just some thoughts........
